Last reviewed: October 11, 2026. Microsoft’s October 2026 Windows 11 security update is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, and this month is more important than an ordinary Patch Tuesday.
For Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro, October 13 is also the end-of-updates date. That means the October security release is expected to be the final normal monthly security update for those consumer editions before Microsoft requires users to move to a newer supported version.
The update is also expected to bring a collection of quality-of-life features and fixes that Microsoft already introduced in the September 22 preview update KB5124010. Many of them use a gradual rollout, so not every feature will appear on every PC immediately.
Why October 13 matters for Windows 11 24H2
Microsoft’s support documentation says Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach the end of updates on October 13, 2026.
After that date, those editions no longer receive the normal monthly security and preview updates, fixes for known issues, time-zone updates or technical support for that version.
Enterprise and Education editions are different: Microsoft says Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education remain supported until October 12, 2027.
If you are still on 24H2 Home or Pro, read our full guide Windows 11 24H2 Support Ends October 13 — What Home and Pro Users Need to Do.
Is October 13 really the final 24H2 update?
For Home and Pro, it is the end-of-support Patch Tuesday.
Microsoft already labeled the September 22 non-security preview KB5124010 as the final preview update for 24H2.
Supported 24H2 editions can still receive security updates according to their lifecycle, which is why Enterprise and Education continue beyond October. Home and Pro do not.
So the important distinction is: October 13 is the last normal monthly security servicing point for 24H2 Home and Pro, not the end of all 24H2 servicing for every edition.
Which Windows versions will get the October update?
The October cumulative security update is expected across currently supported Windows 11 releases, including 25H2 and 26H2, as well as the final Home/Pro 24H2 patch.
Microsoft’s September preview package already applied across 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2, with the three releases sharing a closely related servicing base.
Windows 11 26H2 is already generally available. See Windows 11 26H2 Is Rolling Out — Should You Upgrade Now or Wait? for the upgrade decision.
New File Explorer preview controls
KB5124010 introduced a change to the File Explorer preview pane for files downloaded from the web.
For HTML files, users can see a Preview anyway option after acknowledging the security warning. Non-HTML files such as PDFs can be previewed automatically.
The goal is to balance convenience with Windows’ existing protections around files marked as coming from the internet.
File Explorer Home remembers your layout
File Explorer Home can now preserve whether sections were expanded or collapsed.
That means if you collapse or expand a section, Explorer is less likely to forget the layout the next time you return.
Microsoft also says cloud-file thumbnail previews in the Details pane are more reliable and file properties are easier to scan.
Emoji 17.0 arrives
The update cycle adds support for Emoji 17.0.
Microsoft specifically lists new emoji such as distorted face, fight cloud and hairy creature, along with refinements to several existing emoji.
Press Windows + . to open the emoji panel after the feature reaches your device.
A new Tips widget
Microsoft is adding a Tips widget to the Windows Widgets board.
It surfaces short guidance about Windows features and can also be added to the lock screen through Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
Like many Windows features, it may arrive gradually instead of appearing immediately after the update installs.
Desktop background improvements
Microsoft’s September preview notes several personalization changes that are expected to be part of the October servicing wave.
- Support for using DIB image files as desktop backgrounds.
- More reliable background settings and previews.
- Better wallpaper preview rendering on portrait monitors.
- More reliable slideshow transitions on newly created accounts.
- Slideshow wallpapers that work across multiple virtual desktops without forcing the wallpaper mode back to Picture.
More File Explorer, Magnifier and input improvements
Windows Central reports additional changes expected in the October security update, including File Explorer quality improvements, refreshed Magnifier controls and better input customization.
Some features may be controlled by Microsoft’s gradual rollout system, which means the update can install successfully while one or more new controls remain unavailable until a later configuration rollout.
This is normal for modern Windows cumulative updates.
Why some new features may not appear on October 13
Microsoft increasingly uses Controlled Feature Rollout for non-security features.
The security portion of the update installs on the normal Patch Tuesday schedule, while optional interface improvements can be enabled in phases.
As a result, two fully updated PCs running the same Windows version may temporarily have slightly different feature sets.
How to install the October Windows 11 update
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the October cumulative security update when it appears.
- Save your work and restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update afterward and check again for any remaining components.
Patch Tuesday updates are normally mandatory security updates and will eventually install automatically on supported consumer PCs, but manually checking can get the update sooner once it is released.
Should you install it on day one?
For most home users, yes. Security updates are designed to close known vulnerabilities and are more important than optional preview releases.
Users with mission-critical workstations may choose to wait a short period for early deployment feedback, especially if they depend on niche audio hardware, older drivers or enterprise software.
If you are still on 24H2 Home or Pro, however, the bigger issue is not whether to install the October patch — it is making sure you also move to a supported Windows release.
What should 24H2 Home and Pro users do after the final patch?
Upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 or 26H2 if your PC is eligible.
Microsoft recommends moving to a newer Windows 11 version to remain protected.
Because 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share a closely related platform, upgrades from 24H2 can be much lighter than older full Windows feature upgrades when delivered through Windows Update.
Do not remain on 24H2 Home or Pro for months after support ends just because the October patch installed successfully.
Should you go to 25H2 or 26H2?
Both are supported options, but 26H2 is the newest release.
If Windows Update offers 26H2 normally and there is no compatibility safeguard hold, it is a reasonable destination.
If your device is currently offered 25H2 but not 26H2, moving to 25H2 is still better than remaining on unsupported 24H2.
Do not force a feature upgrade around a known safeguard hold without understanding the compatibility issue.
Known issues to keep in mind
The September preview package KB5124010 has already been associated with several known issues that Microsoft has documented.
One of the most notable is an AC-3 audio-decoding bug that can make some games, media players and productivity apps close unexpectedly.
We cover that issue in detail here: Windows 11 Apps or Games Crashing After KB5124010?
Microsoft has said it is working on a resolution through a future Windows update, so check the October release notes after Patch Tuesday to see whether the status changes.
Secure Boot certificate updates continue
Microsoft is also continuing to update Secure Boot certificates on consumer and non-managed business devices because older certificates began expiring in 2026.
Microsoft says devices that have not yet received the new certificates should continue to boot and receive normal Windows updates, while updated certificates are delivered progressively through Windows Update.
Users should not disable Secure Boot simply because of the certificate transition.
How to check your Windows version before October 13
- Press Windows + R.
- Type winver.
- Press Enter.
- Check the version number.
If it says 24H2 and your edition is Home or Pro, plan an upgrade after installing the final October security patch.
You can check the edition in Settings > System > About.
How to check whether the update installed
After Patch Tuesday, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
Look under Quality Updates for the October 2026 cumulative security update and confirm that Windows reports a successful installation.
You can also run winver to see the updated OS build number after release.
Should you use the Installation Assistant or an ISO?
For ordinary monthly security updates, no. Use Windows Update.
The Installation Assistant or ISO is more relevant when performing a Windows feature-version upgrade, not when installing the October cumulative patch.
If 24H2 must move to 25H2 or 26H2, Windows Update is normally the simplest route because it can use the appropriate enablement-package path on eligible systems.
A quick checklist for October 13
- Install the October security update.
- Restart the PC.
- Check Windows Update again.
- If you use 24H2 Home or Pro, upgrade to 25H2 or 26H2.
- Update important drivers and applications.
- Check that audio, printers, VPNs and work software still function.
- Keep a current backup of important files.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Windows 11 October 2026 update released?
Patch Tuesday falls on October 13, 2026.
Is it the last Windows 11 24H2 update?
For Home and Pro, October 13 is the end-of-updates date and the final normal monthly security servicing point. Enterprise and Education remain supported until October 12, 2027.
What new features are coming?
The servicing wave includes File Explorer preview and layout improvements, Emoji 17.0, a Tips widget, desktop-background improvements and other quality-of-life changes, many of which roll out gradually.
Do I need to upgrade from 24H2 immediately?
Home and Pro users should move to a supported version because normal monthly servicing ends on October 13.
Will every new feature appear immediately?
No. Microsoft uses gradual rollout for many non-security features.
Should I install the security update even if I plan to upgrade to 26H2?
Yes. Keep the current system patched while completing the feature upgrade unless Windows Update bundles the transition as part of the same servicing process.
The bottom line
The October 13 Windows 11 update combines the normal importance of Patch Tuesday with a major lifecycle deadline.
For 25H2 and 26H2 users, it is another security and feature-maintenance update. For 24H2 Home and Pro users, it marks the end of regular support for that version.
Install the October security patch, then make sure your PC is running a supported Windows 11 release. The new interface features are useful, but staying on a serviced version matters far more.
