A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) that is rejected is not the same as one that is refused. If your application was rejected, you can submit a fresh ETA application after addressing the reason given. If it was refused, the UK government says you must apply for the appropriate visa if you still want to travel. There is no ETA appeal or administrative review. Do not submit another £20 application until you have checked the precise wording of your decision email.
This guide explains what each outcome means, how to avoid paying for the wrong application, and what to do if your departure is approaching. Information checked: 7 November 2026. UK immigration requirements can change, so use the linked official GOV.UK services before paying.
UK ETA rejected vs refused: the difference
| Decision in your email | What it generally means | Your next step |
|---|---|---|
| Rejected | The application failed a validity or identity requirement and was not assessed for suitability. | Check the reason, correct the problem and make a new ETA application only if eligible. |
| Refused | The application failed a suitability requirement under the UK Immigration Rules. | Apply for the correct UK visa if you still intend to travel; do not rely on another ETA application. |
| No decision yet | The application is still awaiting a decision. | Check email and junk folders; contact UKVI if more than three working days have passed. |
| ETA granted | You have permission to travel using the passport tied to your ETA, not guaranteed admission at the border. | Check the expiry date and travel with that same passport. |
The Home Office states the distinction explicitly in its April 2026 ETA factsheet and in Appendix Electronic Travel Authorisation. It is the official decision outcome—not a travel agent’s description of your application as “denied”—that matters.
First, check whether your passport is eligible for an ETA
An ETA is available only to specified nationalities. Eligibility is based on the nationality shown on the passport used to apply—not where you live, the country where you are boarding, or whether you have a residence permit in another country. Confirm eligibility against the current official ETA nationality list.
Important for Egyptian passport holders: Egypt is not on the current list of ETA-eligible nationalities. Someone travelling on an ordinary Egyptian passport generally needs the appropriate UK visa instead. A person with dual nationality should check the travel permission that applies to the passport and citizenship they will actually use. An ETA rejection because the applicant is not an eligible national cannot be fixed by submitting a clearer passport photo.
You also do not normally need an ETA if you already have valid UK entry clearance or immigration permission, including a UK visa or settled/pre-settled status. British and Irish citizens should follow the separate passport rules; they do not apply for an ETA. Check the government’s ETA exemptions guidance before applying.
What to do if your UK ETA application was rejected
The Home Office says a rejected application may be submitted again. A common issue is that the passport or facial image has not established the applicant’s identity to the required standard. Other validity requirements, including eligible nationality and the intended immigration route, also matter. The decision email should tell you why the application was rejected.
- Read the whole UKVI decision email and identify the specific reason for rejection; do not guess from a generic payment notification.
- Check your passport nationality and whether an ETA is appropriate for your planned activity in the UK.
- If the issue concerns identity verification, take a new clear photograph of the passport and face, following the official UK ETA app guide.
- Make sure the name, passport number, date of birth and nationality match the passport exactly; correct any inaccurate answers truthfully.
- Start a new application through GOV.UK’s ETA application service or the official UK ETA app, and pay the new fee.
- Wait for the email confirming an ETA has been granted before travelling.
Do not try to edit a submitted ETA. The Home Office’s caseworker guidance explains that submitted ETA applications cannot be withdrawn, varied or amended through the process. A corrected submission is a new application and has a new fee. Paying again does not ensure that it will be accepted.
What to do if your UK ETA application was refused
A refusal is materially different from a rejected photograph or invalid submission. Under Appendix ETA, refusal follows the suitability rules. These include specified criminality, past UK immigration breaches, false information or withheld relevant facts, some previous visitor refusals and other prescribed grounds. The exact reason must be read in your notice rather than inferred from this list.
- Keep the refusal email and any reference number. Review the stated grounds carefully.
- Do not book or attempt to board on the assumption that a pending or refused ETA allows travel.
- Use GOV.UK’s visa checker to confirm the correct visa route for your purpose of travel. A short tourism trip will commonly use the Standard Visitor route; work, marriage and some transit purposes may require another route.
- Prepare a complete and truthful account of the relevant travel, criminal or immigration history, along with supporting documents where applicable.
- Apply for the visa through the official Standard Visitor application page if that is the correct category, and follow its biometric appointment instructions.
- Wait for the visa decision before finalising travel plans. A visa is assessed independently and is not guaranteed after an ETA refusal.
Can you appeal the ETA refusal? No: the published Home Office caseworker guidance states there is no right of appeal or administrative review against an ETA decision. This is different from appeal rights that may exist for certain visa decisions. For a disputed allegation of deception, complex criminal history or previous immigration breach, consider advice from a properly regulated UK immigration professional before submitting a visa application.
Can an ETA be refused even if you previously visited the UK?
Yes. A history of past visits does not override current ETA suitability requirements. For example, the rules contain a ground concerning previous visitor refusals, subject to stated exceptions, and rules concerning certain past immigration breaches. It is not correct to assume that a previous successful holiday automatically resolves those issues. Equally, an ETA refusal is not itself a refusal of entry at the UK border, and it does not automatically mean a future visa must be refused.
If you previously received a UK visitor refusal, identify the date, the exact type of decision and whether a subsequent immigration grant was made with knowledge of that history. These details can matter under ETA 2.9 and its exceptions. Do not omit a previous decision in a new application.
ETA rejected after a face scan or passport-photo problem
The official ETA application service says a face photo that does not meet the digital-photo standards may delay or cause rejection of an application. A blurry passport photo, glare, cropped document edges or an image that does not match the required format may prevent satisfactory identity checks. The actual rejection email, rather than these possible examples, determines what needs correction.
- Take a well-lit, in-focus passport photograph showing the information page without glare or fingers obscuring details.
- Use the official guidance for the required facial photograph: a clear face, neutral background and no filters or editing that changes the person’s appearance.
- If your phone cannot use the UK ETA app properly, submit through the official online service instead; the government supports both routes.
- Check the entire application before paying again; a better image cannot fix an ineligible nationality or a suitability refusal.
There is no verified reason to pay a private intermediary to “unlock” an ETA decision. GOV.UK says another app or website cannot secure a faster decision.
UK ETA rejected or refused just before your flight
| Situation | Safest action before departure |
|---|---|
| Rejected, reason is correctable | Make a new eligible ETA application promptly, but travel only after approval is confirmed. |
| Refused on suitability grounds | Do not repeatedly apply for an ETA; follow the relevant visa application route. Allow time for a visa decision. |
| No email after applying | Check spam or junk mail. After three working days without a decision, seek help using UKVI’s contact service. |
| Already granted, but passport has changed | An ETA is linked to a specific passport. Apply for a new ETA for the replacement passport if you still require ETA permission. |
A UK ETA decision normally arrives by email within a day, but it can take up to three working days. The Home Office instructs travellers to wait for confirmation before travel. A Standard Visitor visa, by contrast, usually takes around three weeks after the required identity and document steps; actual times can vary. Do not assume that applying twice will speed things up. See ETA decision times and visa processing times outside the UK.
UK ETA and Visitor visa: fees, timing and validity
| Item | UK ETA | Standard Visitor visa |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it? | Eligible listed nationalities, for permitted short visits and certain other specified travel. | Applicants who need or choose the visitor visa and meet its requirements. |
| Application fee (checked 7 Nov 2026) | £20 per application; not refundable after submission. | £135 for a standard six-month Visitor visa. |
| Typical decision time | Usually within one day; can take up to three working days. | Usually three weeks after identity and documents are provided. |
| Validity / stay | Two years or until the linked passport expires; does not itself allow a two-year stay. | A standard visa can generally cover a visit of up to six months, subject to its conditions. |
| If ETA refused | Apply for the right visa if you still wish to travel. | Visa application assessed on its own evidence and applicable rules. |
These are government-published headline prices at the review date, not a quotation for additional services such as optional appointments or translations. For example, two rejected ETA applications would cost £40 in total at £20 each, without a refund simply because an application was rejected. Check current fees on the official pages before paying.
What if your ETA is approved but you receive a new passport?
An ETA is digitally linked to the exact passport used to apply. If that passport expires or is replaced, the ETA tied to it will not cover travel on the new passport: someone who still needs ETA permission must apply again. You can verify a granted ETA and its expiry using Check your ETA. A different process applies to people travelling with a UK visa or eVisa; see our guide to updating passport details on UKVI for an eVisa.
Do you need an ETA if you are only connecting through a UK airport?
Your transit arrangements matter. GOV.UK says you need an ETA for landside transit if you will pass through UK border control and your nationality requires an ETA. A connection that remains airside without crossing border control is not the same situation; confirm your itinerary and whether you will pass border control with your airline. A traveller whose nationality requires a visa may face separate transit visa rules. Use the visa and ETA checker instead of assuming every connection is exempt.
Four examples: which next step is right?
- Example 1 — rejected for an unclear photo: A traveller with an ETA-eligible passport receives an identity-related rejection. They take a compliant new photograph and submit a fresh paid ETA application.
- Example 2 — refused after a previous immigration problem: The traveller reads the reason in the refusal notice and checks which visa applies. They do not assume another £20 ETA application can overturn the refusal.
- Example 3 — an Egyptian passport holder living in the Gulf: Gulf residence does not make the Egyptian passport eligible for an ETA. They check the applicable UK visa requirements instead.
- Example 4 — paid but received no decision: The traveller checks the junk folder and waits through the published processing window. After three working days without a decision, they use UKVI support rather than submit a duplicate application.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reapply immediately after a UK ETA rejection?
You can make a new application if the rejection reason has been addressed and you are eligible for ETA. A fresh application costs the published fee again; approval is not guaranteed.
Can I apply for another ETA after a refusal?
The government’s stated route after a refusal is to apply for the appropriate visa if you still want to travel. A new ETA form is not an appeal and cannot be relied upon to bypass a suitability refusal.
Does a UK ETA refusal mean I am banned from Britain?
Not automatically. Refusal of an ETA is not the same as refusal of permission to enter the UK. However, the underlying reason may also affect a visa application, and an exclusion or deportation order has separate legal consequences.
Is a UK ETA rejection the same as a UK visa rejection?
No. An ETA rejection concerns the ETA application’s validity requirements. A visa decision follows the immigration rules for that visa route and has its own decision letter and any applicable review or appeal information.
Will I get my £20 back if my ETA is rejected?
No. GOV.UK says the ETA application fee is non-refundable after submission, including where an ETA application is rejected.
Can I fly while my ETA decision is pending?
If you need an ETA, do not travel until you receive an email confirming the grant. A payment receipt or submitted application does not constitute a granted ETA.
How do I contact UKVI about my ETA?
Use the official ETA help and webchat information or UKVI’s contact finder. GOV.UK says telephone assistance is not available for ETA enquiries, and support agents cannot guarantee an outcome.
