Windows 11 version 26H2, also called the Windows 11 2026 Update, became generally available on September 29, 2026. It is rolling out in phases to eligible PCs already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. This guide explains how to verify your version, prepare safely, install the update, troubleshoot failures, and decide when to wait. All instructions below distinguish Microsoft-confirmed behavior from general troubleshooting advice. Microsoft release health.
At a glance: what changes in Windows 11 26H2?
Microsoft describes 26H2 as a servicing-based update that includes recently announced improvements already delivered to Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. For eligible PCs, the update is designed to be relatively quick and require one restart. This does not mean every feature arrives simultaneously: hardware, region, feature rollout, and managed-device policies can affect what you see. Avoid assuming 26H2 is a completely new operating system or that it makes unsupported hardware compatible.
Who can install Windows 11 26H2?
The initial rollout targets eligible devices on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Eligibility also depends on the standard Windows 11 hardware requirements, compatible drivers, and Microsoft safeguard holds. Windows 10 PCs or older Windows 11 versions should not assume the same fast enablement path applies. Enterprise-managed computers may receive the release only after IT approval.
Step 1: Check your current Windows version
- Press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter.
- Read the version shown in the About Windows dialog.
- Alternatively open Settings → System → About and review Windows specifications.
- If you already see version 26H2, you do not need to install it again.
Step 2: Check PC compatibility
On an existing supported Windows 11 computer, check Settings → Windows Update for eligibility. For a new installation or upgrade from Windows 10, Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool can help verify core Windows 11 requirements. Standard requirements include a supported 64-bit processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot capability, sufficient memory and storage; the detailed processor and device rules matter. Do not disable security protections or use unofficial bypass scripts just to force this update.

Step 3: Back up before installing
- Copy important documents, photos, work files and browser exports to OneDrive or a separate external drive.
- Verify that the backup can actually be opened; merely starting a sync is not enough.
- Keep the laptop connected to power and use a reliable internet connection.
- Check available space in Settings → System → Storage. Microsoft does not prescribe one universal free-space figure for every device or update.
- If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, make sure you can access your recovery key before firmware or major troubleshooting changes.
A restore point is useful for some system changes but is not a replacement for a separate backup of personal files.
How to install Windows 11 26H2 using Windows Update
- Open Start → Settings → Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available if you want to receive eligible updates early.
- Select Check for updates.
- If Windows 11, version 26H2 is offered, select the displayed download/install action and follow the prompts.
- Save your work, restart when requested, then run winver again to confirm 26H2.
Microsoft says eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs may receive the update automatically once ready. If 26H2 is absent, that is not proof your PC is broken: the phased rollout or a compatibility hold may be the reason. Source: Windows release health.
Why is Windows 11 26H2 not showing up?
- Phased availability: Microsoft is offering the release gradually.
- Safeguard hold: a driver, app or hardware configuration may have a known compatibility issue.
- Update settings: early updates are not enabled, or automatic updates are paused.
- Managed device: a workplace or school policy can defer the release.
- Pending prerequisites: install offered servicing and security updates first, then restart.
Recommended response: install ordinary available updates, restart, recheck the official release-health page, and wait if a safeguard is active. Avoid downloading random “26H2 unlockers,” registry patches or modified ISO files.
How to fix Windows Update download or installation errors
Fix 1: Restart and retry
Restart the PC, confirm you have a stable connection and enough free storage, then return to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Record the full error code before trying further steps.
Fix 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run (menu wording may vary by build). Follow its recommendations, restart, and try again. Microsoft support: Windows Update troubleshooter.
Fix 3: Repair Windows component files
If ordinary steps fail, open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator. Run the following commands one at a time and allow each to complete: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow. These tools check and repair system component corruption; they do not guarantee that every Windows Update error will be fixed. Microsoft reference: System File Checker.
Fix 4: Check drivers and connected devices
Disconnect unnecessary USB peripherals, install approved updates for storage, graphics, networking and audio from Windows Update or the PC manufacturer, and retry. Do not install driver bundles from unverified websites. If a device-specific hold exists, follow Microsoft or the manufacturer’s guidance instead of forcing an upgrade.
Fix 5: Read the exact error code
An error code such as 0x80070070 can indicate a storage-related problem, while other codes have different causes. Look up the exact code in Microsoft Support or use the Get Help app. Do not assume one reset script fixes all codes. For managed PCs, collect Windows Update logs and contact IT.
Should you use Installation Assistant or an ISO?
For a PC already running 24H2 or 25H2, Windows Update is the safest default because it respects staged availability and known safeguard holds. Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page offers installation tools and media for supported scenarios, but tool availability and release version can vary. Check the version explicitly before using them. Do not assume the generic ISO is necessarily 26H2 or that it uses the same lightweight servicing path. Official Windows 11 download page.
Known Windows 11 26H2 issues: what Microsoft has reported
As of the September 29, 2026 release-health update, Microsoft documented three notable issues: certain USB Audio Class 1.0 devices may fail to start or play audio; some domain-joined computers protected by Credential Guard may lose their Active Directory trust relationship; and certain virtual desktop environments, particularly Azure Virtual Desktop with FSLogix, may show a black screen or fail to load the desktop after sign-in. Microsoft listed these issues as mitigated, which does not necessarily mean fully resolved by a permanent update. They do not affect every Windows 11 26H2 PC. Read live issue details and mitigation status.
What if you see a black screen after signing in?
Microsoft’s documented black-screen issue primarily concerns some virtual desktop/FSLogix environments, not every home PC. In affected sessions, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, choose Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and confirm. This may restore the desktop temporarily. IT teams should review Microsoft’s Known Issue Rollback guidance and the exact policy for their environment. If a home PC shows a black screen, first verify the display connection, graphics driver and startup symptoms rather than automatically assuming it is the same issue.
What if USB headphones or an audio interface stop working?
Check whether the device uses USB Audio Class 1.0 and whether Device Manager reports Code 10. Try a different USB port, restart, inspect the manufacturer’s driver guidance and consult the release-health page for the latest mitigation. Do not promise that a generic audio-driver reinstall fixes Microsoft’s documented issue.
What if your work computer cannot sign in to its domain?
A domain-trust error after updating may relate to Credential Guard and Machine Identity Isolation policy in some organizations. This is an administrator-level issue. Contact your IT team; do not remove the computer from the domain or modify security policy without authorization. Microsoft provides specific mitigations in the 26H2 release-health notice.
How to uninstall or roll back Windows 11 26H2
If the update causes serious problems, open Settings → System → Recovery and check whether Go back is available. Availability depends on the update mechanism, elapsed time and retained recovery files; a servicing-style update may not present the same rollback experience as a full feature upgrade. Alternatively, Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates may list removable updates. Not every update can be uninstalled. Back up first and follow Microsoft’s instructions for your specific installation. Windows recovery options.
What about personal files, apps, and activation?
A normal in-place Windows Update is intended to retain installed apps, user accounts and personal files. Nevertheless, interrupted updates, pre-existing storage problems or troubleshooting can lead to data loss; keep a verified backup. Digital activation generally remains linked to the licensed device, but major hardware changes are a separate issue. Confirm activation under Settings → System → Activation after the update if necessary.
How to check that the update installed correctly
- Run winver and verify version 26H2.
- Open Windows Update → Update history and check the installation record.
- Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound, printer, webcam and any essential work apps.
- Confirm files and cloud sync are present.
- Check the Microsoft release-health page if a new problem appears.
When should you wait instead of upgrading?
Consider waiting if your PC is business-critical, relies on specialized hardware or software, is managed by an organization, or currently has a Microsoft safeguard hold. Receiving a phased feature update later does not mean skipping ordinary security patches: keep supported Windows security updates enabled. If your machine is already offered 26H2 and is compatible, you can choose to install after a verified backup.
A practical troubleshooting decision tree
- 26H2 not offered? Check your version, update settings, pending updates and official safeguard notices; do not force it.
- Download stuck? Restart, check network and storage, run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Installation fails? Save the exact code, repair system files if appropriate, and inspect drivers.
- Black screen or audio failure? Match your symptoms to Microsoft’s documented affected scenarios before applying workarounds.
- Major problem after installation? Back up, review recovery/uninstall options, and contact support if needed.
