Missed a Royal Mail delivery? Check your card or tracking first: another attempt is normally made the next working day. If that does not suit you, arrange a free redelivery or collect from the location shown once the item is available. Check the collection deadline too—some Post Office and Royal Mail shop collections now have a 10-day limit.

This guide covers Royal Mail deliveries in the UK. The booking page also supports Parcelforce, but do not assume every Royal Mail collection rule applies to every Parcelforce service. Public pages and screenshots were checked on 2 November 2026.

1. Check whether another delivery attempt is already planned

Read the “Something for you” card and the latest Royal Mail tracking update. Royal Mail’s redelivery guidance describes an automatic attempt on the next working day. Do not head to a collection office while tracking still indicates a delivery attempt is planned; first check where the item is and whether it is ready for collection.

A Delivery Office, a Post Office branch and a Royal Mail Shop are different collection locations. Use the one named for your parcel, not simply the nearest building with a postal counter.

2. Book a redelivery from the official website

  1. Open Royal Mail’s redelivery page and select Book a redelivery.
  2. Enter the reference requested by the booking form. The current first screen asks for a reference number, with a help link beneath it.
  3. Select Continue, then follow the address, delivery-option and date choices offered for your item. Check the destination carefully.
  4. Complete the booking and keep its confirmation. We inspected the public first screen only; later options depend on the reference and service.

Royal Mail asks for 48 working hours’ notice for a booked redelivery. Use the dates offered rather than assuming you can book for tomorrow. If you need the parcel sooner, check whether collection is available instead.

No red card—or no number you recognise?

Open the reference-number help on the booking page. It explains that newer cards carry a nine-digit ID and that an individual parcel reference, between 9 and 27 characters, can also be entered. Check your retailer’s dispatch email or order tracking for the parcel reference; an order number is not necessarily the same thing.

If you cannot identify a usable reference, ask the sender or use Royal Mail’s help route. Do not invent one. Missing a card does not mean you should assume collection will be allowed with just a tracking screenshot; check the rules for your item first.

3. Collect the parcel with the right documents

For a Delivery Office or Post Office collection, Royal Mail lists the delivery card and an accepted document in the addressee’s name. Examples include a valid passport or driving licence. Check the full identification requirements before leaving, especially if someone else will collect for you. Royal Mail Shops and lockers use the collection or QR instructions in your notification.

The Post Office collection guide also explains how to select a local branch through the redelivery service. Wait until your parcel is available there and check its opening hours. Booking delivery to a branch does not mean the parcel is already at that branch.

4. Check the deadline: 18 days or 10 days?

Royal Mail’s October 2026 terms update says the shorter period took effect on 25 October 2026, after the originally announced date was postponed. The location and how the item arrived there matter:

Where the item is heldPublished retention period
Customer Service Point, including a Post Office acting as one18 days
Post Office branch or Royal Mail Parcelshop chosen by the sender/recipient, including a requested redelivery there10 days
Check the collection notice for your particular item; do not treat every Post Office collection as the same service.

Book and collect within the applicable period. Do not assume moving a parcel creates a fresh 18-day window. If the notice is unclear, confirm the last collection date with Royal Mail.

Special Delivery, passports and other restricted items

Alternative addresses and lockers are not available for every item. Royal Mail restricts Special Delivery Guaranteed and signed-for international items, with further exclusions for age/ID and signature services. Use only the destinations offered for your parcel.

For HM Passport Office and UKVI deliveries, another residential or business address is not permitted. The dedicated guidance says that without the red card you cannot collect at the Delivery Office or Post Office counter, but you can arrange redelivery to your home. Follow that guidance rather than a general parcel workaround.

If the booked redelivery does not arrive

Keep the confirmation, check the latest tracking and use the redelivery-help link on the official page. If tracking shows a return to sender or the item remains missing, contact the sender; Royal Mail’s missing-item guidance directs recipients to do this. A redelivery booking is not proof that a parcel has been delivered.

Open Royal Mail directly when checking a delivery. If a text asks for a small payment through an unfamiliar link, use our guide to spotting fake delivery messages before entering any details.
