If your BC Ferries sailing is cancelled, first check the notice for your exact route, direction and departure time. Then establish whether your booking has been moved or cancelled, and whether you have already checked in. Do not assume your reservation automatically gives you a place on the next departure.
This guide explains the published procedures for rebooking, leaving the terminal and refunds. Checked 7 November 2026; it is not a live departure board.
What happened during the November 6 disruption?
BC Ferries reported weather-related disruption involving high winds and waves in the Strait of Georgia on 6 November. Its subsequent notice said many sailings had resumed while some routes remained affected. The official advisory and service notices should be checked for the latest position.
An earlier warning or cancellation list is not proof that a later sailing is cancelled. Equally, a notice that service has resumed does not confirm every departure. Use the journey-specific checks below before travelling to a terminal.
How to check whether your sailing is cancelled
- Open BC Ferries Current Conditions and choose your route and direction.
- Match both terminals to your booking. Vancouver and Nanaimo each have different terminal names in route listings; the city name alone is not enough.
- Check the departure date and time, then read the linked service notice for its issue or update date.
- Distinguish a confirmed cancellation from a sailing described as at risk. A weather warning can affect several routes without cancelling every departure.
- Check your booking notification as well as the public departure information. You need to know whether the journey is operating and what has happened to your reservation.
Write down four details before calling: departure terminal, arrival terminal, departure date/time and booking reference. This prevents a notice for the opposite direction or another terminal from being mistaken for your sailing.
For example, a notice about Tsawwassen–Duke Point does not, by itself, establish the position for Horseshoe Bay–Departure Bay. Both involve travel between the Vancouver and Nanaimo areas, but they are different routes.
What happens to a booking on a cancelled sailing?
BC Ferries’ personal-travel guidance distinguishes cancellation before terminal check-in from cancellation after you have arrived. Its general arrangements include the following; the Horseshoe Bay exception below must also be checked.
| Your situation | Published general arrangement | Your next check |
|---|---|---|
| Booked sailing cancelled before check-in | BC Ferries tries to move the booking to an alternative later sailing, subject to space. If it cannot, the booking is cancelled and fares and booking fees are refunded. | Read the notification to identify whether you were moved or refunded. |
| Sailing cancelled after check-in | Staff try to accommodate you where space is available. Customers already booked on the next departure load first. | Follow terminal instructions; your cancelled reservation does not guarantee immediate boarding. |
| You decide not to travel after checking in | Return to the ticket booth to check out and arrange the applicable refund. Cash or equivalent transactions require ticket-agent handling. | Keep the receipt and confirmation of what was cancelled. |
If a different departure is offered, confirm its terminals, check-in requirements and vehicle details before changing onward plans. A new departure time is not an arrival-time guarantee for a connecting flight or appointment.
Important exception: Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay
BC Ferries has separate disruption arrangements for vehicle travel from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay during terminal construction. The page expressly applies in that direction; do not automatically apply it to the return journey.
Vehicle travellers need a booking and advance payment. Do not drive there expecting to purchase an At Terminal fare and join a general standby queue for this route.
If you have checked in and your sailing is cancelled, staff may direct you to leave, make a new booking and return within its check-in window because holding space is reduced. If you cannot be accommodated on the next sailing, the published arrangement is an automatic refund and instructions to leave. Follow staff directions rather than waiting in a vehicle lane on the assumption that your original place carries over.
Refunds: what to check before contacting BC Ferries
The company’s service-disruption guidance says automated refunds for cancelled bookings go back to the original payment method; credit-card refunds can take 5–7 business days to appear. A cancellation email and a visible card credit are separate events.
If the cancelled outbound sailing leaves you with a return booking you cannot use, contact 1-888-223-3779 about cancelling and refunding that booking. Do not assume the return journey has also been cancelled automatically.
Keep your booking reference, cancellation or rebooking email, payment receipt and any terminal refund receipt together. When following up, identify the amount paid, the amount already returned and which journey each relates to. This is more useful than reporting only that a refund is “missing.”
Already left the terminal without checking out?
The BC Ferries terms describe a route for requesting a refund for a cancelled sailing if you left without going through the ticket booth: send copies of your receipts to Customer Relations. Use the current contact instructions and retain your originals.
Also distinguish a cancellation by the operator from your own decision to cancel an operating journey. The existence of bad weather elsewhere is not proof that your booking qualifies for the cancelled-sailing process. Check the notice and the cancellation/change terms applying to the actual fare.
Does a weather cancellation pay for a hotel or taxi?
A fare refund and compensation for extra expenses are different. BC Ferries’ disruption policy excludes compensation for cancellations outside its control, including weather. Its expense-reimbursement process applies to qualifying disruptions within its control, subject to the stated conditions, receipts and limits.
Do not book accommodation or alternative transport assuming the ferry company will pay. Ask which policy applies to your disruption and keep itemised receipts if you intend to submit a request. A receipt records spending; it does not establish approval.
A short checklist before you leave home
- Confirm the exact route, direction and departure on the official status pages.
- Check whether your reservation was moved or cancelled; do not confuse a public sailing status with a personal booking confirmation.
- Review the requirements of any replacement booking, including vehicle size and check-in window.
- Recheck onward connections separately if your arrival time changes.
- Keep copies of notices, confirmations and payment records.
If a message asks you to enter card details to receive a refund, reach the company independently through its official website or contact number before proceeding. Our guide to checking whether a website is a scam explains how to assess an unfamiliar payment page.
