Updated October 13, 2026. Millions of U.S. Amazon Prime customers may qualify for automatic refunds under a Federal Trade Commission settlement. The revised terms increase the maximum total refund to $200, expand eligibility and remove the need for new claims. That does not mean every Prime subscriber will receive $200. This guide explains the official eligibility test, payout timeline, payment methods and what to do if your refund is missing.

What changed in the Amazon Prime FTC refund in 2026?

In September 2025, the FTC announced a $2.5 billion settlement resolving allegations that Amazon used misleading Prime sign-up processes and made cancellation unnecessarily difficult. The settlement included $1.5 billion for consumer refunds and a $1 billion civil penalty. In September 2026, a federal court approved changes to accelerate remaining consumer payments, widen eligibility and allow supplemental payments. The FTC says Amazon had issued more than $845 million in consumer redress by September 2026. The case concerned specific enrollment and cancellation practices, not an automatic refund for every Prime membership.

Who qualifies for the Amazon Prime refund?

According to the FTC’s current official refund page, consumers must meet all three requirements:

• Be an Amazon Prime customer in the United States.

• Have signed up through a challenged Prime enrollment flow or tried unsuccessfully to cancel through the online cancellation flow between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025.

• Have used no more than 20 Prime benefits in any 12-month period following Prime enrollment.

The challenged enrollment experiences named by the FTC include the universal Prime decision page, shipping selection page, single-page checkout and Prime Video enrollment flow. Prime Video and Prime Music benefits can count toward usage. Amazon uses its business records to determine eligibility. Being a Prime subscriber during the dates alone does not establish entitlement.

What does the 20-benefit rule mean?

The 2026 revision extends eligibility to certain people who used between 11 and 20 benefits in a one-year period, a group excluded from earlier rounds. The FTC’s published standard is no more than 20 benefits in any relevant 12-month period after enrollment. Do not assume that simply watching 20 videos, making 20 purchases or having 20 months of Prime determines eligibility: the official program counts Prime benefits according to settlement rules and account records. Ask the administrator to review a specific case if you are uncertain.

How much is the refund: $51, $149 or $200?

The $200 figure is a maximum total refund for eligible customers, not a guaranteed payment. Earlier payments were capped at $51. The revised order permits an additional automatic payment of up to $149 to consumers who accepted an earlier refund, if the remaining consumer-fund conditions are met. Total refunds cannot exceed the eligible Prime subscription fees refunded under the program or the applicable $200 cap. Some consumers may receive less, and many Prime customers will receive nothing because they do not qualify.

Amazon Prime refund payment timeline

• November 2025: initial automatic refund payments began under the original settlement.

• Through July 27, 2026: the earlier claims process had a deadline; the revised process does not require filing a new claim.

• September 2026: FTC announced expanded automatic payments and a higher total cap.

• Starting October 1, 2026: automatic payments begin for additional eligible customers with up to 20 counted Prime benefits.

• By April 2027: the FTC expects eligible refunds to be delivered; any qualifying supplemental payments may start by April 2027, depending on the fund reconciliation.

The court order also sets March 5, 2027 as the acceptance deadline for certain newly issued payments. The FTC’s general consumer guidance says payments expire 60 days after issue. Follow the specific expiration date shown on your actual payment; do not wait until the overall April 2027 program timeline to accept an individual payment.

Do you need to apply or submit a new claim?

No. Under the revised settlement, all future payments are automatic. You do not need to file a new claim, complete a form, respond to a settlement notice or pay an application fee. Previous reporting about an earlier claims portal refers to an older phase of the settlement. The FTC’s updated page explicitly says no action is required to receive an eligible refund.

How will Amazon send the money?

Eligible consumers may receive an electronic payment through PayPal or Venmo or a mailed check. Check your normal accounts and physical mail for a legitimate payment. If you receive a payment, accept or deposit it before its expiration date. Never pay someone to “release” or “unlock” a settlement refund.

How to check your refund status or fix a missing payment

• Open the FTC’s official Amazon refund page: ftc.gov/enforcement/refunds/amazon-refunds.

• Read the eligibility criteria and check the official settlement administrator website linked by the FTC: SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com.

• If a payment is missing, a check was sent to an old address, or your name is wrong, email admin@SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com or call 1-888-999-8094.

• Provide only the information reasonably necessary through verified official channels; do not send passwords, one-time codes or banking credentials in response to unsolicited messages.

• If you previously submitted a claim, explain the date and any confirmation details to the administrator. The revised order does not require a new claim.

The FTC directs payment questions to the settlement administrator because Amazon administers the program, not the FTC. An administrator may be able to clarify the status of an individual payment; public eligibility rules alone cannot confirm your personal payout.

How to recognize Amazon FTC refund scams

The FTC says it is not contacting people about refunds in this matter. A caller, text or email claiming to be from the FTC and requesting a payment, login credentials or financial details is a warning sign. Amazon will never ask you to pay money to obtain this refund. Avoid search ads or websites promising guaranteed $200 checks, and never share verification codes. Report suspected scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Can you receive the refund if you canceled Prime?

Possibly. The settlement specifically concerns certain sign-ups and attempted cancellations within the qualifying period. Current membership status alone is not the test. Eligibility depends on the FTC’s three requirements and Amazon’s records; contact the administrator for account-specific questions.

Can people outside the United States claim a refund?

The FTC eligibility requirements explicitly identify U.S. Amazon Prime customers. A Prime membership in another country does not by itself qualify for this U.S. settlement. The published rules do not establish a general worldwide refund program.

What if you already received $51?

Keep the payment records. You may qualify for an additional automatic payment of up to $149, potentially bringing your total to $200, but this supplemental round is conditional on the amount of settlement funds accepted by consumers. It is not a guaranteed second check. No new application is needed.

What if you did not receive a payment yet?

A missing payment in October 2026 does not necessarily mean you are ineligible, because automatic distributions continue into 2027. Confirm you meet the criteria, monitor your payment methods and mail, and use the administrator’s official contact information for unresolved issues. Avoid assuming a specific payout date unless the administrator confirms one.
