Last reviewed: October 11, 2026. Amazon has launched a new family of Alexa Tablets, and the biggest change is not just faster hardware. The Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11 and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro run Android and include access to the full Google Play Store.
That means users can install mainstream apps such as YouTube, Netflix, Gmail and Google Docs directly while still getting Amazon services including Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music and Alexa+.
Amazon says shipping begins on October 14, 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada, followed by the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain on October 19.

A Nanomatte version of the 12 Pro starts at $549.99 and uses an etched anti-glare surface designed to preserve detail and contrast.
Why Google Play changes the Amazon tablet experience
Traditional Fire tablets use Fire OS, which Amazon describes as a fork of Android. They are built around Amazon services and the Amazon Appstore rather than the standard Google Android ecosystem.
The Alexa Tablets take a different approach: Amazon says they run Android and include the full Google Play Store.
For mainstream users, that removes a long-standing limitation. There is no need to wonder whether a common Android app exists in Amazon’s store or rely on unofficial workarounds to add Google services.
Alexa Tablet 8: the portable model
The smallest model has an 8.7-inch display, aluminum body, 329g weight and an 8-core processor.
Amazon claims up to 14 hours of video playback. It is aimed at reading, casual browsing, streaming and travel rather than heavy multitasking.
It comes in Graphite, Rosette and Teal.
Alexa Tablet 11: the balanced option
The 11-inch model adds a 2.5K display at 276 pixels per inch, 90Hz scrolling, an 8-core processor, 8GB RAM and dual Dolby Atmos speakers.
Amazon claims up to 15 hours of video playback.
For many buyers, this is likely to be the most balanced model because it offers a larger display and much more memory without moving to the 12 Pro’s premium price.
Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: Amazon’s premium productivity model
The 12 Pro uses a 12-inch 3:2 display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 4nm 8-core chip.
Amazon says higher configurations offer up to 16GB RAM, while the tablet provides quad Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E and up to 16 hours of video playback.
It is also the only model designed around a dedicated keyboard and stylus accessory system.
What is the Nanomatte display?
Amazon says the optional Nanomatte screen uses a photolithography process developed with Corning to etch a fine texture into the glass.
The goal is to reduce glare without sacrificing as much sharpness and contrast as conventional matte treatments.
That makes the Nanomatte option especially interesting for reading, drawing and outdoor use.
Keyboard and stylus accessories
The Alexa Tablet Pro Pen supports USI 2.0, 4,096 pressure levels, tilt detection, magnetic docking and wireless charging.
The Pro Keyboard attaches magnetically and adds a trackpad without Bluetooth pairing.
Amazon lists the Pro Keyboard at $149.99 and the Pro Pen at $89.99.
Alexa+ is built into the system
Alexa+ is integrated into the operating experience rather than being just another app.
Users can say “Alexa” or tap an Ask Alexa control to begin a conversation without leaving the current app.
Amazon also includes On-Screen Intelligence, which can analyze what is visible on screen when the user explicitly enables it.
Amazon says the feature can, for example, compare items on a webpage, extract recipe details or help add visible dates to a calendar.
What about privacy?
Amazon says On-Screen Intelligence is off by default and requires opt-in.
A visual indicator appears when Alexa can see the screen, and users can disable the feature later.
That matters because screen-aware assistants can be more useful but also require clearer user control.
A Kindle-style reading mode
Opening a book can switch the tablet into a reading-focused mode that reduces distractions, lowers blue light and changes the display theme.
Amazon claims up to 20 hours of reading battery life in this mode.
On the 12 Pro, users can also annotate supported books with the Pro Pen and sync annotations across supported Kindle apps and Kindle Scribe.
Can you install YouTube, Gmail and Google Docs?
Yes. Amazon explicitly lists YouTube, Netflix, Gmail and Google Docs among the apps available through Google Play.
This is one of the clearest reasons the new tablets appeal to a broader audience than traditional Fire hardware.
How are Alexa Tablets different from Fire tablets?
Fire tablets use Fire OS and Amazon’s app ecosystem. The new Alexa Tablets use Android with the full Google Play Store while keeping Amazon apps and Alexa+ integrated.
The hardware positioning also changes. Alexa Tablets start at $229.99, much higher than the low-cost pricing historically associated with Fire tablets.

Which model should you buy?
- Buy the Tablet 8 if portability, reading and casual use matter most.
- Buy the Tablet 11 if you want the best general-purpose balance of screen size, memory and price.
- Buy the Tablet 12 Pro if you want keyboard, stylus, premium display options and heavier multitasking.
Should you wait for Black Friday?
The launch is only weeks before the holiday-shopping season, so price-sensitive buyers may prefer to wait and see whether Amazon offers promotions.
Amazon has not promised a specific Black Friday discount, so do not treat a future sale as guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions

When do they ship?
October 14 in the U.S., Mexico and Canada; October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
How much is the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro?
It starts at $499.99. The Nanomatte version starts at $549.99.
Is Alexa+ included?
Yes. Alexa+ is built into all three models.
Can the 12 Pro replace a laptop?
It supports a keyboard, trackpad, stylus and multi-window workflows, but whether it can replace a laptop depends on the apps and workloads you use.
The bottom line
Amazon’s most important tablet change in years is the move to full Android and Google Play on the new Alexa lineup.
That removes one of the biggest limitations associated with Fire tablets and gives users access to a far wider app ecosystem.
The trade-off is price: these devices cost much more than classic budget Fire tablets, so buyers now have to decide whether Google Play, stronger hardware and Alexa+ justify the premium.
