Last reviewed: October 10, 2026. Google has released Chrome 155 to the stable channel for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The desktop release includes 247 security fixes, including four vulnerabilities Google rates Critical.

For Windows and Mac, Google lists Chrome 155.0.8059.39/.40, while Linux is receiving 155.0.8059.39. Chrome 155.0.8059.39 is also rolling out on Android through Google Play.

There is one important wrinkle: Google began an early stable rollout of Chrome 156 to a small percentage of Windows and Mac users on October 7. If your browser already shows version 156, you are on a newer build and should not downgrade.

For everyone else, the practical advice is simple: check the installed version, let Chrome update, and relaunch the browser so the security fixes actually take effect.

Why Chrome 155 is a major security update

Browsers are unusually sensitive software because they process websites, downloads, extensions, passwords, payment pages, video, documents and web apps every day.

Google says this Chrome 155 release contains 247 security fixes. Four publicly highlighted issues are rated Critical:

  • CVE-2026-106382: Use after free in Chromecast.
  • CVE-2026-106197: Use after free in Browser.
  • CVE-2026-106358: Use after free in Navigation.
  • CVE-2026-106347: Use after free in Track.

Google may restrict detailed bug information until a majority of users have received the fixes. That reduces the risk of detailed vulnerability information helping attackers before enough users have patched.

Google’s October 6 release post does not say these four Critical vulnerabilities were being actively exploited in the wild. They should still be treated as important fixes because of their severity.

What does ‘use after free’ mean?

A use-after-free flaw is a memory-safety bug. Software allocates memory for an object, later releases that memory, and then accidentally continues trying to use it.

Depending on where the bug exists and what protections are in place, the result can range from a crash to memory corruption or more serious security consequences.

Users do not need to diagnose these vulnerabilities individually. The safest response is simply to run the newest stable Chrome build available to the device.

How to update Chrome on Windows or Mac

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose Help > About Google Chrome.
  4. Wait while Chrome checks for updates.
  5. Click Relaunch if the button appears.

Google says normal tabs and windows reopen after the browser restarts. Incognito windows do not reopen, so save anything important before relaunching.

If there is no Relaunch button and Chrome says it is up to date, you are already on the newest version currently available to your rollout channel.

How to check your exact Chrome version

Open chrome://settings/help or use More > Help > About Google Chrome.

As of October 10, seeing any of these can be normal:

  • 155.0.8059.39 or .40: current broadly rolling-out Chrome 155 stable on desktop.
  • 156.0.8078.12 or .13: Chrome 156 early stable on a small percentage of Windows and Mac devices.
  • An older 154 build: Chrome 155 may not have reached the device yet, or the updater may need attention.

If Chrome already reports 156, stay on it. Version 156 is newer than 155.

How to update Chrome on Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Choose Manage apps & device.
  4. Find Chrome under available updates.
  5. Tap Update.

Google released Chrome 155.0.8059.39 for Android and says Android releases contain the same security fixes as the corresponding desktop releases unless otherwise noted.

To see the installed version, open Chrome > More > Settings > About Chrome.

What about Chrome on iPhone and iPad?

Chrome on iPhone and iPad follows Apple’s platform rules and does not always line up exactly with desktop/Android versioning.

Keep it updated through the App Store. Open your App Store profile, look under available updates, and tap Update next to Chrome if offered.

The important goal is not matching a desktop version number—it is running the newest version available for your device.

Do you need to reboot your computer?

Usually no. Relaunching Chrome is normally enough to apply the browser update.

A full Windows or Mac restart can still help if Chrome refuses to update, behaves oddly afterward, or has been running continuously for a long time.

Will updating close your tabs?

Google says standard tabs and windows are restored after relaunch.

Incognito windows are the exception: they do not reopen. Finish any important Incognito session before clicking Relaunch.

It is also sensible to let active downloads finish first.

What if Chrome 155 is not available yet?

Google says the stable rollout happens over days and weeks, so not every computer gets the release simultaneously.

Opening About Google Chrome forces a fresh update check. If the browser remains on an older build, try closing every Chrome window and reopening it, then restart the computer if necessary.

On a work or school computer, updates may be controlled by an administrator. In that case, do not try to bypass company or school policy.

What if Chrome says ‘Update failed’?

Google documents update failures involving disabled updates, unavailable update servers, failed update checks and failed downloads.

Useful official troubleshooting steps include:

  • Restart the computer and try again.
  • Check whether antivirus, firewall or parental-control software is blocking Google’s update services.
  • Make sure the operating system still meets Chrome’s system requirements.
  • Reinstall Chrome if important update files are missing.
  • Contact the administrator if updates are centrally managed.

Should you uninstall Chrome first?

No. A normal Chrome update is designed to install in place.

Uninstalling and reinstalling is mainly useful when the update mechanism is damaged or Google specifically recommends it for an update failure.

Before reinstalling, make sure important bookmarks, passwords and settings are synchronized or backed up.

Will Chrome 155 delete bookmarks or passwords?

A normal browser update should not delete bookmarks, stored passwords, history or your Chrome profile.

Those items remain part of your existing profile. Users signed into Chrome can also synchronize selected data with their Google Account according to their sync settings.

Should you wait for Chrome 156 instead?

No. Do not remain on an older build just because Google has started testing a newer early stable version.

If Chrome 155 is the newest stable build offered to your computer, install it. If Chrome 156 is already offered to you, keep the newer 156 build.

Security is about running the newest stable update available to your device—not waiting for a particular version number.

Does Chrome 155 make the browser completely secure?

No browser update can prevent every future vulnerability.

Chrome 155 fixes a large set of known security issues, but new bugs will continue to be discovered. That is why Chrome releases security updates frequently.

Keep the operating system updated as well, remove extensions you no longer trust or use, avoid suspicious downloads, and use strong account security such as unique passwords, passkeys and multi-factor authentication where available.

What about Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers?

Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera and other browsers share parts of the Chromium codebase, but each vendor ships its own builds and updates.

A Chrome 155 security announcement does not mean you need to install Chrome to protect a different Chromium browser.

Instead, update the browser you actually use through its own built-in update mechanism.

Why Google does not immediately reveal every bug detail

Google says access to bug details and links can remain restricted until most users have updated.

Restrictions can also stay in place if the same issue exists in a third-party library used by other projects that have not yet patched it.

This is a standard coordinated-disclosure practice designed to give users and downstream software projects time to receive fixes.

A quick Chrome 155 security checklist

  • Open About Google Chrome and check the installed version.
  • Allow any update to download.
  • Relaunch the browser.
  • Remember that Incognito windows will not reopen.
  • Update Chrome on Android through Google Play.
  • Update Chrome on iPhone/iPad through the App Store if offered.
  • Do not downgrade if you already received Chrome 156 early stable.
  • Remove suspicious or unused extensions.
  • Contact IT if a managed browser refuses to update.
