🔎 Calculate percentages, percentage change and difference

Choose the calculation you need: a percentage of a number, percentage increase or decrease, or percentage difference between two values.

Keeping each formula separate helps avoid confusing percentage change with percentage difference.

  • Percent of a number.
  • Percentage increase and decrease.
  • Percentage difference between two values.

Worked examples and practical tips

The right formula depends on whether you want a part of a total, the change from an original amount, or a symmetric difference between two values. Follow a concrete example before trying your own inputs.

Find a percentage

20% of 250 = 50; an increase from 200 to 250 is 25%.

Percentage of value = value × rate ÷ 100.

Find a percentage of an amount

To find 15 percent of 200, multiply by 0.15.

200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30

Percent increase

Compare the increase with the original value.

(100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%

Percent difference

For two nonzero values, use their average as the denominator for a symmetric comparison.

|120 − 100| ÷ ((120 + 100) ÷ 2) × 100 ≈ 18.18%

Tip: Percentage change from an original value of zero is undefined. Percentage difference is not the same as percentage increase. Percentage change compares to the original value, not the final one.

💡 Calculation notes

Work out percentages, percentage change and what percent one number is of another. Includes straightforward examples for discounts and increases.

  • Percentage of value = value × rate ÷ 100.
  • Percentage change compares to the original value, not the final one.
  • Percent of a number calculates an amount, not automatically a percentage.
  • Percentage change compares a new value with the original value.

ℹ️ How to use

  1. Choose the correct mode: percentage of a number, percentage change or percentage difference.
  2. Enter the requested numbers. For a change, keep the original value in the original/old field.
  3. Calculate and check whether the result is an amount or a percent.
